Overview

Microsoft 365's Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is a more modern, more secure password reset process that gives ECU alumni the control for a password reset anytime, anywhere using a short, online form and identity verification. All you need is your authentication device.

SSPR’s up-to-date security enforces complexity requirements and allows ITCS to quickly apply new industry-standard security policies when required, keeping your data protected.

Register with SSPR.

The first time you use the SSPR service, you will register your account.

  1. Go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com. The password reset page opens. Was your alumni account created before 2014? Log in with login.microsoftonline.com.

  2. Type your alumni email address into the Email or Username text box.
  3. Enter the characters in the picture or the words in the audio in the second text box.
  4. Click the Next button.
  5. If prompted, choose a security/identity verification method: Authenticator mobile app number match, phone call, phone text, alternate (non-ECU) email verification code.
  6. Choose a new password at least 15 characters. Confirm the new password. Choose Finish.
  7. Going forward you will reset you alumni password every 365 days or manage your account authentication through pirate365.ecu.edu or mymail.ecu.edu (account settings). Legacy alumni - those accounts created before 2014 - continue to access their account settings through login.microsoftonline.com.

Reset your password or unlock your account: Verify identity.

Subsequent resets begin with this page.

  1. Verify your identity using your chosen authentication method: Phone call, mobile text, Authenticator mobile app (number match), alternate email.* The choose new password dialog box opens.

*Update your multifactor authentication methods anytime through the security settings of your Microsoft 365 account. Click your profile picture, Choose View Account.

Reset your password or unlock your account: Choose a new password.

  1. Type your current password in the choose a new password dialog box.
  2. Type your new password twice.
  3. Click the Finish button.

Please note

Remember the following:

  1. If you work remotely, see these instructions on updating your computer login after changing your password.
  2. Log back in to Microsoft 365 with your new password for continued access to ECU email, OneDrive storage and your Microsoft 365 account. You will be prompted for this.
  3. You must manually change your password for any mobile apps.
