Pirate Techs Student Computing Support

Pirate Techs provides students help with network connectivity, mobile email setup, Microsoft software installation, virus/Trojan horse issues, spyware/malware infections and more. Pirate Techs is a certified, full-service repair center for Dell, Lenovo and Apple computers with limited hardware support for most other computers.

PirateID, Passphrase and ECU ID

Your PirateID and passphrase get you into email and Office 365, connected to the ECU network, Blackboard and most other ECU systems and tools that require a login. Visit the passphrase maintenance portal to set up security questions, add your mobile number, add an alternate email and create a passphrase.

The ECU ID number is a numerical identifier for you in ECU administrative systems. This number begins with a “B.” Your ECU ID number is listed in PiratePort.

PiratePort Web Portal

All-in-one resource portal for students. Log in with your PirateID to find ECU’s course catalog, transcripts, parking information and more.

Course Tools

Blackboard is ECU’s learning management system. Visit the Blackboard, Canvas & Integrated Tools page for tutorials and features.

Clickers (Audience response devices) are designed to actively engage students during the entire class period, gauge students’ level of understanding of presented material, and provide prompt feedback to the instructor, who can easily upload a grade to Blackboard from polled responses (TurningPoint software required).

iWebfolio is an electronic portfolio management system that can be used to organize, reflect and present information.

Mediasite is the university’s video-capture solution providing resources for the recording, management and sharing of video.

The Respondus LockDown Browser, integrated with Blackboard, is a custom browser that locks the testing environment for students.

Webex is a web conferencing program in which a group of people interact in a virtual online meeting environment. Webex sessions can be accessed live anytime, anywhere that attendees have an Internet connection.

On-Campus Wireless Access

ECU’s network, eduroam, is more than access to the ECU resources and the internet. Enroll once for four years of access anywhere eduroam is available – including many other UNC campuses!

Off-Campus Virtual Private Network (VPN) Access

When away from campus, students connect to on-campus resources, such as Piratedrive, through a Virtual Private Connection. After the easy, initial setup, log in using this secure connection from anywhere with just a click!


Students have access to free Microsoft software, the Qualtrics survey-creation tool, a variety of statistical software packages, antivirus software, and assistive technology software like Read & Write Gold. Students can also access software through the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL).

Search the student computer lab database to find the appropriate campus lab for you, then click the information icon to pin down the location, software and available seats. Learn about student print allowances and Pirate Print kiosks.

File Sharing

ECU blocks all file-sharing traffic on the university’s network. If you need to use software such as BitTorrent, uTorrent, or Vuze for legitimate business or academic purposes, please submit a file-sharing exception request form through the IT Help Desk.

Sensitive Data Storage and Transmission

Be familiar with the appropriate storage and transmission requirements of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Social Security Number (SSN) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) data.

Students can use WordPress, an open-source Web application, for creating blogs or the MyWeb self-service portal to create an academic website or blog.


Students have access to online training at no cost through LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda), Microsoft Imagine Academy, and SAS.

ECU Mobile App

Students can instantly contact other Pirates from the ECU directory, stay in the loop with the latest campus news, keep tabs on ECU Pirate sports, watch videos from recent campus events, check grades, access course content and browse the course catalog. The ECU mobile app is available as a free download from iTunes and Android Market on Google Play.
