Overview

NOTE: Faculty and staff using an ECU-managed macOS computer will continue to change their password through their computer – not through Microsoft 365 My Account.

On Monday, August 18, current faculty, students and employees switched from the PirateID Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) service to Microsoft 365's SSPR service.

This move simplifies user account management by bringing account authentication (MFA) and password reset tools under Microsoft's Security Info umbrella. Most users can log in to

Some users, however, will need to register 1-2 password reset methods (instructions below).

What happens next

What is staying the same?

Going forward, you will still change your password annually and follow all current password criteria. That is not changing.

What is changing?

What this means for you

If you receive a pop-up message

If you are a current user and receive a pop-up message that states, "More information required," when you log in to your account, register password reset methods. Password reset methods include a non-ECU email address and a phone number. It is recommended you set up both for your account.

  1. Click Next. You need your ECU username/password.
  2. If you cannot remember your password or your account is locked, go to pirateid.ecu.edu to change or unlock your password. Then go back to Microsoft 365 registration.
  3. Add your alternate email and phone number to Security Info.

You do not receive a pop-up

If you do not receive the "More information required" pop-up when you log in, that's great! You have at least one password reset method set. We do recommend you go to My Sign-Ins | Security Info | Microsoft.com and check your MFA and password reset methods to make sure you have a default method and a backup method.
