Overview

The examples on this page use the Announce list but are the same for any ECU listserv. Replace "Announce" with the name of your list. Commands are shown in ALL CAPS. Any of these commands can also be executed from the LISTSERV.ecu.edu interface.

Common Commands

Send mail to a list

  1. Address an email to: announce@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. Type the message to be distributed to the list.
  3. Send the message.

Subscribe to a list*

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SUBSCRIBE announce Firstname Lastname.
  4. Replace Firstname and Lastname with your name.
  5. Send the email.

Unsubscribe from a list

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SIGNOFF announce.
  4. Send the email.

Turn mail off

To turn off the list temporarily – if you go on vacation, for example – follow these steps.

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce NOMAIL.
  4. Send the email.

Turn mail back on

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce MAIL.
  4. Send the email.

Unsubscribe from all lists

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SIGNOFF * (NETWIDE).
  4. Send the email.

Receive a copy of mail you post

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce REPRO.
  4. Send the email.

Do NOT receive a copy of mail you post

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce NOREPRO.
  4. Send the email.

Receive messages in digest form

You can receive a day's worth of messages in one message, for example.

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce DIGEST.
  4. Send the email.

Receive messages one at a time

This is the default way to receive messages.

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce MAIL.
  4. Send the email.

Hide your name & address from the review command

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: SET announce CONCEAL.
  4. Send the email. Note: To reset, change step 3 to: SET announce NOCONCEAL.

Review Current List Options

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: QUERY announce.
  4. Send the email.

Receive a list of files (if any) available for the list

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: INDEX announce.
  4. Send the email.

Receive a list of the lists at ECU

  1. Address an email to: listserv@listserv.ecu.edu.
  2. No subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message: LISTS.
  4. Send the email.

*There are three types of listservs:

  1. Open Confirm. Subscribers may join at their own discretion. Email confirmation required.
  2. By Owner. The list owner must confirm members.
  3. Closed. Subscribers do not self-subscribe; only the owner may add new members.
