Are faculty and staff allowed to print in computer labs?

No, faculty and staff are not allowed to print in student computer labs unless printing is an instructional requirement for a class and a special printing account is created.

If you are teaching a course instructing students on how to print, such as a GIS class using a specialty plotter or a printing and graphics course in art, please submit the Student Printing Support request indicating you require a Pirate Print account. Accounts do require department chair approval.

Additionally, both Joyner and Laupus libraries allow staff to print for a fee.

Are refunds given to students when there’s a balance at the end of the semester?

No, unused funds roll over to the next semester until August when any remaining balance is wiped except for personal funds. Personal funds roll over to the next semester until you leave ECU and are wiped after two semesters.

Can I submit a print job from my mobile device?

Yes, students print wirelessly from their mobile device to any of the eight Mobility Print printers on campus. See the Related Articles section of this page for links to macOS, iOS and Windows instructions. You must be on campus, connected to the eduroam network with one of the Mobility Print printers installed on your device.

Can I submit a print job that goes over my allotted pages and pay for the balance?

You can add personal funds using a debit/credit card. Unused personal funds roll over until you leave ECU.

Can my student organization print in a computer lab?

No, student organizations do not have a Pirate Print account.

Do I get a discount for duplexed documents?

Duplexed documents reduce your total pages by half so you save paper and print quota funds.

How do I check my print balance?

There are two ways to check your print balance. First, when you log in to a lab computer, a pop-up window shows the current balance. You are also able to check your transaction and print histories.

Second, log in to pirateprint.ecu.edu to see all transactions, including balances and jobs printed. This is also where you log in to add funds to an account.

How do I print my research paper?

When you log in to the computer lab printer, a pop-up window shows your print balance. When you press Print, another window shows the document name, the number of pages and the cost to print. This gives you the opportunity to check everything and make sure you want to print. Remember, there are no credits for a botched print job!

How many pages can I print per year?

1500 black/white ($0.02) or 300 color copies ($0.10) or any combination of b/w and color. Printing from a plotter is $0.10 per square foot.

I have run out of funds! How do I add more funds to my account?

Log in to pirateprint.ecu.edu to add funds to your print account through personal credit or debit card. There is not a cash alternative to pay for printing.

Personal funds stay in the account (although leftover ECU funds are lost each fall) until used or you leave ECU. There are no refunds of personal print funds, and when you leave the university, all funds are lost.

What about specialty printing, like my AutoCad project, that requires a plotter?

Print jobs from plotters are charged $0.10 per square foot.

What file types are supported by Pirate Print?

The following file types are supported:

  • Microsoft Office Word
  • Microsoft Office Excel
  • Microsoft Office Powerpoint
  • Microsoft XPS
  • Adobe PDF

What if my printed document doesn’t look like it should? Can I get a credit for a botched job?

There may be circumstances beyond your control where a credit back to your account may be applicable. In that case, please submit the Student Printing Support request. Be sure to describe what has occurred, the lab room number and building name and the time of day.

Or can call the IT Service Desk at 252-328-9866.

What is the maximum file size I can submit?

The maximum size is 100 MB (anything larger will be rejected).

What is the student print allowance for students per year?
