How can I make changes to a survey that is already in production status?

To modify an element of your data entry forms after the move to Production, enter Draft Mode and submit the changes.

Note that changes to your project configuration and setup are possible, but should be minor and infrequent. Some project and form design updates will require contacting a REDCap administrator and/or submitting data collection instrument changes in draft mode.

Changes to data collection instruments in draft mode are not made to your project in real time. After making updates, submit the changes for review. Review and approvals are typically completed in two business days. This post-production control process provides an additional check to ensure that data in your records are not modified, deleted or overwritten unintentionally.

How do I cite REDCap?

Please cite the publication below in study manuscripts using REDCap for data collection and management. Use the following boilerplate language:

Study data were collected and managed using REDCap electronic data capture tools hosted at East Carolina University. 1 REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure, web-based application designed to support data capture for research studies, providing 1) an intuitive interface for validated data entry; 2) audit trails for tracking data manipulation and export procedures; 3) automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to common statistical packages; and 4) procedures for importing data from external sources.

Paul A. Harris, Robert Taylor, Robert Thielke, Jonathon Payne, Nathaniel Gonzalez, Jose G. Conde, Research electronic data capture (REDCap) – A metadata-driven methodology and workflow process for providing translational research informatics support, J Biomed Inform. 2009 Apr;42(2):377-81.

Is there a recommended browser for accessing REDCap?

Google Chrome is the recommended browser to use with REDCap.

One of my collaborators is unable to see our project. How can I add her?

First, check that all project collaborators have been added to the project. Select the project and browse to User Rights, found under Applications on the left side of the screen.

In the Add new user field, enter the collaborator’s last name. If the person is found, click the name, then click Add with custom rights.

Don’t see the name? Type in the PirateID (not full email address). Otherwise, the person may not have access to REDCap or the profile has not yet been set up (REDCap basic guide, pages 38-39).

What is the API?

For the advanced user.

The REDCap API (Application Programming Interface) allows external applications such as SAS to connect to REDCap. It enables remote retrieval or modification of data or settings within REDCap, such as performing automated data imports into or exports from a specified REDCap project (REDCap Advanced guide, page 41).

What is the difference between development and production status?

Development

At creation, all projects are designed, built and tested in Development. Design decisions are made in real time and are implemented immediately. All survey and data entry features and functions should be tested while in development. In this phase, no real data is entered.

Production

After testing the workflow, data validation, branching logic, etc., the project moves to Production. When ready to deploy the project, request it be moved into Production mode by clicking the button on the Project Setup page (REDCap Basic guide, page 7).

What is the REDCap downtime schedule?

All REDCap system users are notified prior to scheduled downtime for system upgrades or maintenance.

Where do I find the link to my survey?

First, enable your survey in the Online Designer. Next, click Survey Distribution Tools under the Data Collection menu on the left side of the screen (REDCap Basic Guide, page 15).
