Overview
Here is an overview of the most common activity types in Poll Everywhere.
Word Cloud
Word clouds visualize responses that build and shift in real time as audience responses are repeated. Frequent responses appear larger in the middle of the word cloud.
Receive responses: SMS text, the web and mobile app.
Multiple Choice
Multiple choice activities are the most common type of activity. The audience chooses one or more options from a set of responses you provide.
Receive responses: SMS text, the web and the Poll Everywhere mobile app.
Best practices for multiple choice
- Try a live chart. Responses display live as a bar or column chart that moves and adjusts in real time.
- Set a correct response. Designate correct responses to a multiple choice activity.
- Keep it simple. Limit response options as text gets smaller on the results chart if there are too many. Learn more about additional response options with the Import Question Method.
- Use images in place of words.
- They're versatile. Multiple choice questions are a safe choice for a large class or company town hall as a traditional A, B, C, as a true/false question or as a Likert scale.
- Visit the Poll everywhere blog for more articles on uses and features of the multiple choice activity.
Open Ended Questions
Receive responses: SMS text, the web and the mobile app.
The Open-ended activity type allows the audience to respond to the question with a written answer. Responses can be displayed three ways: 1) word cloud, 2) text wall, or 3) spotlight.
Setting visualization type
After creating your open-ended activity, click the Visual settings button, then select the visualization. Freely switch between the different response visualizations in the Visual Settings of your activity.
Clickable Image Question
Show responses: Selecting the “Responses” option will show the participants' response pins on the clickable image activity which allows the presenter and participants to see how others responded.
Clickable image activity allows participants to drop pins on an image to respond. Presenters can upload an image or select one of the provided example images.
Choose your image: Presenters upload any image like a graph or map. Any image with information participants need to identify or share works.
Mark correct regions: Presenter defines a region for pin responses and marks a region as the correct option. Please note, the presenter can only do this for responses received after the region is defined. Any clicks received before the region is defined will not be captured by the region.
Show responses. Selecting the responses option shows participants' response pins on the image. Visible to presenter and participants.
Q&A
Show responses. This activity only allows responses through the web or the Poll Everywhere mobile app. NOTE: Q&A titles are limited to 255 characters; responses are limited to 300 characters. Upvotes and downvotes do not count against the response limit.
The Q&A activity allows the audience to submit open-ended responses, questions or ideas, then upvote or downvote other submissions. It's a great way to swiftly discover which questions the audience would like to address. It's also perfect for brainstorming with a group as it provides a crowd-ranked list of ideas within seconds.
This is the only activity that enables the audience to see other participants' responses on the response page. Everyone is able to upvote or downvote all of the responses submitted.
