Multifactor authentication (MFA), also called two-step authentication or two-factor verification (2FA), is ECU's security action that verifies (authenticates) your identity during log in to ECU resources from a non-ECU network. For a successful log in, you need your ECU password (factor one) plus identity verification through a phone call, text or app notification using a device (factor two).

This tutorial explains how to:

  • Access Microsoft 365 account settings to manage methods.
  • Change your default authentication method.
  • Add, change or delete an authentication method.
  • Sign out of all devices if one of your devices is lost, stolen or hacked.

Access account and security settings

  1. Log in to your Microsoft 365 home page: pirate365.ecu.edu. Legacy alumni accounts created before 2014 log in through login.microsoftonline.com.
  2. Click your profile image, then the View account link from the drop-down menu. You may be required to authenticate. The My Account page opens.

  3. Click the Update Info link in the Security info section. The page opens and shows your current authentication method/s. Links allow settings to be changed.

Authentication methods

Change your default authentication method. You can change your default authentication method to: 1) App based - notification, 2) Phone call, 3) Phone text, 4) App based - code.

Add an authentication method. 1) Authenticator app, 2) Phone call, 3) Texted code, 4) Alternate phone. Click a method and follow the prompts for setup.

Change your authentication phone number. Click the Change link beside the phone section. Add the new number and decide whether to verify through text or phone call. Click Next then verify through the new phone. A message verifies the new number in the system.

Changing an alternate email address follows the same process and is then verified through an email sent to the address.

Lost device. If you lose a device used for signing in, Microsoft recommends you sign out of all devices.

Click the Sign out everywhere link. A dialog box opens explaining that, if you have lost your device, you need to sign out of all sessions/devices. Click OK to continue.
