We are all responsible for the ECU information in our care. Some default features and apps included with the macOS and Windows operating systems do not comply with security guidelines or ECU regulations and may leave work data unprotected and vulnerable to data theft.

ECU follows the Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks and disables some consumer-oriented features on ECU-managed computers. These measures:

  • Increase security on ECU-managed computers
  • Improve university network security
  • Protect ECU data
  • Meet state IT audit requirements

Other features are enabled and managed by IT admins only.

Managed Browser Features

The following Firefox browser options also apply:

  • The default home page is the ECU home page. Users can change this.
  • Firefox accounts are disabled. This feature syncs bookmarks and saved passwords across devices and is a security risk.
  • The bookmark toolbar always shows. Users can turn off this feature.

Software Exception Request

If you require a blocked software or app for ECU-related work, submit an ECU Technology Request form through the ECU PORT system to request an exception. Access to PORT is restricted; if you do not have access to the PORT system, please see your department administrator to submit the form on your behalf.

""

If you inadvertently install a blocked program, it will not function, and a pop-up message alerts you that the program has been terminated or blocked.
