Overview
This tutorial created on Windows 11 using the Edge browser.
Skip the password! ECU now allows three passwordless authentication methods – Microsoft Authenticator app, Yubico security key, and Windows Hello for Business (ECU-managed Windows 11 only).
This tutorial outlines how to configure a Yubico security key as an authentication method for your ECU account. You can also configure up to 100 account credentials on a Yubico security key. See this catalog page from Yubikey to find which accounts work with Yubikey.
Yubico Security Keys USB-A or NFC,* can be purchased through PORT (departments) and Dowdy Student Store on campus or any other business that sells technology.
*NFC is a wireless specification used like Bluetooth to authenticate on a mobile device by tapping the key. The mobile device must be NFC capable.
Step 1
Have your Yubico security key purchased. From your computer, sign in to Microsoft 365 security info at mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info. Your MFA (authentication) page opens.
Step 2
Click the Add sign-in method link.

Step 3
Choose Security key (sign in using a USB, Bluetooth or NFC device).

Step 4
Click Next and authenticate your ECU Microsoft 365 account using your current method.

Step 5
Choose the type of security key, USB or NFC. Click USB device.

Step 6
Have your key ready. Click Next.
Step 7
Choose where to store this passkey (passkey means your ECU account private credential). Click the security key icon. Choose Next to continue with setup.

Step 8
Choose Next. A popup tells you to insert your security key into a USB port.

Make sure you can see the round "y' inset on top of the key.

Step 9
Create a 6-digit PIN for this device. When you log in to your ECU account, you can authenticate with this PIN in place of your PirateID and password. Click OK. A message will let you know you are all set.
