This is the recommended option for identity verification at ECU, especially for international travel.
As a new user, follow these steps to configure the Microsoft Authentication app on your mobile device to verify your identity during log in to many of ECU's platforms and programs. You will need both your computer and mobile device for setup.
On Your Computer
Step 1
The first time you sign in to your Office 365 account or ECU email, a dialog box appears alerting you that, "Your organization needs more information to keep your account secure." Click the Next button. The Additional security verification dialog box opens.

Step 2
In the How should we contact you? section, choose Mobile app from the drop-down menu.
In the How do you want to use the mobile app? section, choose one of the following:
- Receive notifications for verification. During identity verification, you will receive a notification pop up on your mobile device. Tap Approve.
- Use verification code. During identity verification, you will receive a code on your mobile device. Enter the code into the Additional security verification box.

Step 3.
To begin set up of the Microsoft Authenticator app, click the Set up button.

The Configure mobile app pop-up box opens on your computer. IMPORTANT: Leave this pop-up open and DO NOT click the Next button just yet. You must first set up the Authenticator app on your mobile device.
On Your Mobile Device
Step 4
Install the Microsoft Authenticator app from your phone's app store (Windows Phone, Android or iOS only). If prompted, allow notifications and agree to the privacy statement.
Step 5
Open the app and add your ECU account. Then choose Work or school account.
Step 6
Allow Authenticator to take a picture or record video. Then, point your camera to the QR code on the computer screen.
If the scan does not work, enter the code manually.

Step 7
Click the Next button to close the Configure mobile app dialog box. The Additional security verification box is still open. The system now tests the setup to make sure it's working correctly and sends a notification to your mobile device.

Step 8
Approve the authentication request through the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
Step 9
The Additional security verification dialog box allows you to add phone verification to your password. This further secures your account and allows access if you are unable to verify through the Authenticator app.
Congratulations! The primary verification method for your Office 365 account is now set up.
The Additional security verification dialog box contains an app password. If your device does not support the Microsoft Outlook mobile app, you will need to use this password to configure your mobile device's default email. See the MFA Enrollment: App Passwords article for step-by-step instructions.
It is recommended that you also configure a secondary MFA method in case your primary form of verification is unavailable.
