Configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device for account verification. This is the recommended option for identity verification at ECU, especially for international travelers. The authenticator app can generate a code with no internet or cell service. You will need both your computer and mobile device.
Using your Computer
Step 1. Log in to your Microsoft 365 account.
New users: The first time you sign in to your Office 365 account or ECU email, a dialog box alerts you that Your organization needs more information to keep your account secure. Click the Next button. The Additional security verification dialog box opens. Login: pirate365.ecu.edu
Current users configuring a new device: View the IT Knowledge Base article, "Tutorial - Manage ECU Account Authentication."
Step 2. Choose Mobile app.
In the How should we contact you? section, choose Mobile app from the drop-down menu.
In the How do you want to use the mobile app? section, choose one of the following:
- Receive notifications for verification. During identity verification, you receive a notification pop-up on your mobile device. Tap Approve.
- Use verification code. During sign in, a number appears on your computer screen. Enter this number into the verification box on your mobile device. For more information, see the Overview - Authenticator App & Number Matching article from the resources list.
Step 3. Click Set up.
To begin set up of the Microsoft Authenticator app, click the Set up button. The Configure mobile app pop-up box opens on your computer. IMPORTANT: Leave this pop-up open and DO NOT click the Next button just yet. You must first set up the Authenticator app on your mobile device.

Step 4. Install the app.
Install the Microsoft Authenticator app (Windows Phone, Android or iOS app stores only). If prompted, allow notifications and agree to the privacy statement.
Step 5. Add your ECU account.
Open the app on your mobile and tap the plus (+) sign (upper right). Then tap Work or school account.
Step 6. Scan the code.
Tap Scan QR code in the options list on your mobile's screen. If prompted, tap Allow. Scan the QR code on your computer screen (this is YOUR individual code because you are logged in). Type in the code manually if the scan does not work.

Step 7. Click the Next button
Click the Next button to close the Configure mobile app dialog box. The Additional security verification box is still open. The system now tests the setup to make sure it's working correctly and sends a notification to your mobile device.

Congratulations! The default verification method for your ECU account is now set up.
Step 9. Add secondary verification methods.
From the Security info screen in Microsoft 365, be sure to add your phone number and an alternative email address for backup verification methods.
