Overview

Configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device for account verification. This is the recommended option for identity verification at ECU, especially for international travelers. The authenticator app can generate a code with no internet or cell service. You will need both your computer and mobile device for setup.

App setup: computer 

Step 1. Log in to your Microsoft 365 Copilot account.

New users: The first time you sign in to your Microsoft 365 account (pirate365.ecu.edu) or ECU email (mymail.ecu.edu), a dialog box alerts you that Your organization needs more information to keep your account secure. Click the Next button. The Additional security verification dialog box opens.

Current users: Log in to your Microsoft 365 sign ins: mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info

 

Step 2. Choose mobile app.

In the How should we contact you? section, choose Mobile app from the drop-down menu.

In the How do you want to use the mobile app? section, choose your preferred verification option.

Step 3. Click Set up.

To begin set up of the Microsoft Authenticator app, click the Set up button. The Configure mobile app pop-up box opens on your computer. IMPORTANT: Leave this pop-up open and DO NOT click the Next button just yet. You must first set up the Authenticator app on your mobile device.

Step 1. Install the app.

Install the Microsoft Authenticator app from your mobile device app store. If prompted, allow notifications and agree to the privacy statement.

Step 2. Add your ECU account to the app.

Open the app on your mobile and tap the plus (+) sign (upper right). Then tap Work or school account. Tap the Scan QR code option. The scan screen opens.

Step 3. Scan the QR code.

If prompted, tap Allow. Scan the QR code on your computer screen (this is YOUR individual code because you are logged in), or type in the code manually if the scan does not work.

Step 1. Click the Next button

Click the Next button to close the Configure mobile app dialog box. The Additional security verification box is still open. The system now tests the setup to make sure it's working correctly.

Step 2. Approve.

Approve the authentication request through the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.

App set up: Other important tasks

Step 1. Create a backup of your Authenticator account.

This is useful if you upgrade to a different mobile device. Just transfer your Authenticator settings from the backup.

  1. From the Authenticator App's settings, choose Back up this device.
  2. Toggle on the Backup button.
  3. Type in your ECU email address.

Step 2. Add secondary verification methods.

Go back to your sign ins page to configure at least one or more alternative MFA methods for your account It is very important that you have more than one method of authentication! mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info
