Help! I am trying to join the eduroam network, but my device won't connect. I am just prompted for my PirateID and then nothing happens. Is something wrong with the network?

First, make sure you have successfully completed the onboarding process before attempting to connect to eduroam. You must allow the JoinNow wizard to install the certificate to your device before connecting to eduroam. Onboarding is easy, and you will receive an email after completing the process. After you receive the email, you will be able to join the eduroam network.

I am support for several faculty in my department. Should I onboard their devices to eduroam as well as my own?

No. Because you must use your PirateID/passphrase to onboard a device to eduroam, that is the same as sharing your PirateID and passphrase, which is not an acceptable practice at ECU.

I have two laptops, one tablet and a mobile phone. Is there a limit to the number of devices I can onboard?

Yes. There is a limit of ten (10) personal devices for each user.

What if I visit another campus that uses eduroam?

Eduroam users from other institutions do not need to onboard again. On arrival, they join the ECU eduroam network using their institution’s login credentials.

Likewise, ECU users who visit an eduroam institution just log in on arrival with their PirateID and passphrase.

What is eduroam?

Eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity across home campuses and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop or having the network ID on their mobile device.

Which wireless devices are NOT supported on the network?

  • Wireless printers
  • Chromecast
  • Wii
  • Any device with a wireless b radio
  • Windows 10 S (not supported on eduroam) – Students can download free Windows 10
  • Google Home
  • Sonos home wireless speakers

Who should I contact if I am having trouble connecting to eduroam?

On ECU’s campus, faculty, staff and students call the IT Help Desk at 252-328-9866 or visit the nearest Pirate Techs location. Traveling ECU eduroam users should call the ECU IT Help Desk 252.328.9866 | 800.340.7081 to confirm their enrollment before calling the network support office on location.

Visitors to ECU's campus should first call their institution to confirm their eduroam enrollment before contacting the ECU IT Help Desk.

Will I still have access to all my resources?

Faculty/staff access through the eduroam wireless SSID provides access to both the internet and internal ECU resources.

Student access through the eduroam wireless SSID provides access to the internet, Piratedrive and forward-facing resources like the ECU website, Blackboard, Pirate Port, Piratemail, Pirate Print, etc. For access to additional internal resources, students should utilize the student VPN (remoteaccess.ecu.edu).
